My name is Jean Hansen, and I’ve been a TradaCasino player since 2015. Since joining Trada, I’ve great fun chatting to the team on live chat. When I mentioned my recent winter sun holiday to Portugal, they asked if I would be interested in a guest post about my experience… so here I am!
On Thursday 1th March, TradaCasino are kicking off a fantastic prize draw to win a £500 Holiday Voucher! To earn tickets, you simply have to do the following:
- Leave a comment on this blog, telling me what your dream holidays destination is.
- Place £20 in bets on the slot Spinions Beach Party.
The winner will be contacted on the 5th March 2018. To help you choose your next Winter Sun destination, feel free to read my experience of Albufeira below.
Dreaming of some Winter Sun?
The weather outside is frightful. Today, Ireland and the UK have the Beast from the East to contend with! Freezing temperatures and blizzard conditions are keeping us all indoors. So why not take a chance and dream?
That is exactly what you need to do to lift the mood. Pack a small suitcase of summer essentials and the odd cardigan and take a look online to see what you can afford. When it comes to the Algarve you will be surprised how much holiday a budget will buy you.
Choosing your dream destination
Albufeira in the heart of the Algarve is a perfect choice with long stretches of sandy beaches, delicious food and drink and lots to see and do. A short flight will land you in holiday paradise.
Arriving in at Faro Airport is a breeze. The airport is much smaller than UK airports. Before you have blinked you are through to the sunshine and ready to start your holiday.
As it was my first visit I spent the forty minute transfer to Albufeira with my eyes eagerly taking in the orange groves and beautiful resorts. We arrived at our apartment in Albufeira at sunset and quickly dropped off our bags and headed out to find the essential teabags and milk for the morning before treating ourselves to a fish and chip supper and a few glasses of wine.
This really is the friendliest city and we landed up sharing our table with a lovely couple who were eager to give us tips on making the best of our week. Almost everyone speaks English too.
A goes a long way in the Algarve
Depending on the size of your win, you might be on a budget or you might be splurging. Whatever your situation, Albufeira is a great place to make the dreaming of winter sun a reality.
Imagine the winter months of January to April with balmy temperatures of 18 to 20 degrees. The joy of wearing sandals and sundresses with the sun prickling my skin as I sipped a beer shandy in the sunshine, was a great reward for a long beach walk which is how we spent our first morning. We followed this by wandering through the old town. I had to admit that the many steps clocked up on my Fitbit had tired me out. This led to the highlight of the first day a mad trip in a Tuk Tuk flying down the road feeling like someone starring in a romantic comedy.
I would really recommend spending the money on a trip on the double decker red bus. This unique tourist idea originated in London but you can find them in most cities. It is a great way to cover a lot of ground early on in your visit. You can of course hop on and hop off, but we stayed on enjoying the sunshine from the top deck and planning the rest of our visit.
Although taxis are cheap enough and we do enjoy walking, we were delighted to discover the municipal bus service which can get you almost anywhere for less than 2 Euros.
Delicious food choices
Our first bus trip was to the market in Albufeira. There are quite a few markets in the Algarve but this little gem is well worth visiting. Fresh fish, cheeses, fruit and vegetables and of course yummy baked goods made the fact that we were self-catering an adventure in new tastes.
The local supermarket Pingo Doce was also a treasure trove where we stocked up on local cheeses, and delicious Pastéis de Nata – Portuguese custard tarts.
Our week in the sun was a week to remember. Especially when faced with grey skies, washing and housework and the reality of everyday life. It is good to dream.
Spending time looking for a holiday online is fun. We browsed about and looked at options before choosing a package holiday with Love Holidays. It really was the best value for money.
I know one thing for certain. I want to go back.
